Stories of Lake Michigan

Join composer Hannah Mufuka for an intimate, interactive afternoon of music, storytelling, and connection. For this special performance, audience members will be seated on the stage floor with the artist, creating an immersive setting in which to experience traditional and contemporary mbira music from Zimbabwe, along with excerpts from Mbira, My Love, which premiered at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Audience members are encouraged to bring a blanket, cushion, or pillow to sit on and make themselves comfortable.

A Black, Zimbabwean American composer, Mufuka is invested in our human connection with one another and the Earth. She is captivated by change, memory, and the persistence of joy—fascinations that are at the heart of her work.

Throughout the afternoon, she will share stories about the mbira’s intimate relationship with water and invite audience members to share their own experiences with water and the Great Lakes. During her time as Composer-in-Residence at the Good Hart Artist Residency, she will transform these stories into a new musical soundscape installation.

Suggested for ages 7 and up.
