Great Lakes Center for the Arts is committed to providing a safe and healthy venue for all our patrons, artists, volunteers, and employees. While visiting the Center may feel a little different, you can expect the same world-class talent on the stage or screen that you are accustomed to. We appreciate your continued understanding as we adjust to a new normal. The Center’s updated policies meet or exceed state and federal requirements and will continue to evolve as we advance through the various reopening phases. 

Attend With Confidence! You can feel safe visiting the Center knowing that…

  • Before entering the building, patrons, employees, and volunteers have temperatures taken and wear masks while in common areas and within 6′ of others 
  • Capacity is limited to 25%, which is 132 seats & household seating groups are spaced 6′ apart
  • Touchless ticketing has been implemented when scanning tickets and a staffed Box Office table is available outdoors before an event to assist with ticketing questions
  • To discourage gathering indoors, events are performed without intermissions or concessions
  • Performances are limited to 90 minutes and restroom capacity is limited to four people at one time
  • The Theater is electrostatically sprayed before each use including between performances on days with multiple events
  • The venue is equipped with MERV 13 filters and air is constantly filtered with a full filtration cycle in the Theater every 20 minutes with a full fresh air exchange every 60 minutes. The restrooms are filtered with a full filtration every 6 minutes and with a full fresh air exchange every 30 minutes
  • Patrons are directed to exit by section, with those seated closest to the doors dismissed first to reduce congestion

Michael M. Kaiser

Michael M. Kaiser

Founding Artistic Director

Mr. Kaiser was President of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. from January 2001 through August 2014. During his tenure, he expanded educational and artistic programming for the United States’ center for the performing arts, oversaw a major renovation effort of the Center’s theaters, and led the nation in arts management training. In 2001, Mr. Kaiser created the Kennedy Center Arts Management Institute, renamed the DeVos Institute of Arts Management in May 2010. In honor of his accomplishments, the Board of the Kennedy Center named him President Emeritus in 2014.

Celebrations surrounding the Grand Opening of the Great Lakes Center for the Arts in July 2018 will span several days and include world-class performances and fun, family activities in recognition of this historic occasion in Northern Michigan. From a Founding Circle donor dinner on stage, to the incredible music of the distinguished Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and culminating with a Community Open House on July 8, 2018.
